About MargheritaMargherita is a small town located in Tinsukia district of Assam. The town is bounded by beautiful scenic beauty on all sides with the Dihing River flowing by the side. Though Margherita is a perfect tourism destination, the tourism industry could not flourish over here due to the frequent terrorist activities of ULFA in this part of Assam.
Margherita was earlier known as Ma-Kum (meaning abode of all tribes). It is believed that the engineer Chevalier Roberto Paganini who built the Dehing Bridge kept the name Margherita as a reigning tribute to the Queen of Italy of the same name, though this is not fully clear.
Demography of MargheritaAccording to the 2001 census, Margherita had a population of 23,826. The average literacy rate stands at 76% and the population percentage of males to females is 52% to 48%. The population is a mix of Assamese, Bengali and Nepali along with people who migrated from places like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other adjoining states. There is a religious mix of Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
Economy of MargheritaThe people in Margherita include both in agriculture and tea plantation. Apart from that, the North Eastern Coalfields located here provide a good income source to the people. Plywood is also another industry situated here. Tata Tea also has its offices located in Margherita.
Tourism of MargheritaMargherita is bounded by scenic beauty with hills and lush greenery on all sides. There is also a golf course with a stream which adds to the scenic beauty. However, due to the presence of active terrorism in this part, tourism is not developed yet. The Dihang River by the side also adds a picturesque view to Margherita.

- By Rail: There is a railway station located in Margherita apart from another station in Tinsukia which is located around 45 kms away. Long-distance trains and inter district trains also run to Margherita.
- By Road: There are also tourist buses which run to Margherita. As Margherita falls in the transit point to Arunachal Pradesh, there a number of buses plying through Margherita.
- By Air: The nearest airport is the Dibrugarh Airport located around 96 kms away.
